Major: Finance

Why did you choose to attend Carroll University?

I choose to attend Carroll university because of the people and the beautiful campus. The people at Carroll from the faculty to the students are so incredibly nice, everyone want to succeed and work together. Carroll gives you the ability to stand out and flourish with it's smaller classrooms, and is more committed to you. They have a large number of resources for students and they will put you in the best position to succeed, and are invested in your success. Carroll's faculty are involved and committed to the school and you can really tell they embrace the Carroll community and family.

What made you choose your academic major or area of study?

For me I always knew I wanted to go into business it was just about finding the right fit. Finance gave me the flexibility in terms of career opportunities but also taught me a lot of specific skills, applicable to a career. I was always interested in math and numbers but didn't know if accounting was for me, and more of the finance terminology and theories made sense to me. This degree combined parts of economics, and accounting and finance and really allowed me to grow as a student, and learn a wide variety of material.

How has what you’ve learned prepared you for your future?

Many classes at Carroll have done a good job preparing me for the future especially in skills like problems solving and working as part of a team. However the business and specifically finance courses have really helped me because they have taken textbook concepts and applied them to real life. Many of the upper level courses after your freshman year will have you work on projects applying concepts to a real-life situation. This is something that has become incredibly beneficial, especially after now completing two internships and seeing how important many of these concepts are in the real world.

What opportunities have you had to work closely with a faculty member and what impact has that had on your education?

Every year Carroll has offered me and countless other students the opportunity to work with faculty members in a research base, and this can be incredibly rewarding. However the best part of Carroll is how committed the faculty especially the business faculty is to our success. They will know you by name, ask about life, and want to help you grow as a student and as a person. You will have the opportunity to work with them throughout class and during office hours and it is critical that you take advantage of these opportunities.

What’s one unique experience you’ve had relating to the coursework for your academic major or area of study?

One unique experience for me came in my senior year when I had to work with a group of fellow classmates to pitch a stock Idea to my professor. This was a new challenges because it was a real-life situation for anyone looking to become a broker or investor. It incorporated textbook principles into a real-world problem involving new and fluid data, that required creative thinking from students. This project motivated us to push harder and we had to learn some things on the go, or self teach. This is something that is incredibly important because in the real-world you will have to work with co-workers and may have to teach yourself something new.

How has Carroll enriched your growth as a person outside of the skills you’re learning in the classroom?

Experiences at Carroll like participating and running student led organizations, competing in intramural sports, and being on an athletic team all have helped me grow as a person. Carroll constantly motivates and pushes its students to be involved and try new things and it's these experiences that really impact your life and help you grow. Trying new things was always something I strive away from but with all the support from Carroll, and my classmates, professors, and coaches it was easy to embrace new challenges.
