New Federal Rules Impacting F-1 Student Status
July 17, 2026-
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published a federal ruling today that
changes our long-held understanding of “Duration of Status” (D/S) for nonimmigrants
granted entry to the U.S. on academic status, including F-1 status, directly impacting
international students studying at Carroll University.
This rule now replaces the last understanding of “duration of status,” and requires admissions with fixed end dates on Form I-94s, requires students and exchange visitors to file formal extensions with USCIS, shortens F-1 grace periods, and imposes new limits on program changes.
As implementation is expected within sixty (60) days of the rule publication, Carroll University aims to provide clear communication with students on best practices and new required procedures to maintain their F-1 status.
Incoming students, current students, and Carroll employees can access a Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) page through the my.carrollu.edu portal.
