Students spent the semester exploring readings in the tradition of the Italian travel narrative, including classic works by authors such as Twain and James, as well as more contemporary examples. They also sharpened their skills in writing travel essays in preparation for a month-long visit to Italy where they lived in apartments in the heart of Florence, immersing themselves completely in the culture. Students had ample opportunities to explore several distinct regions of the country and reflect on how their experiences there were shaped by the major authors they read during the semester. At the completion of the journey, each student produced a major travel essay.
