Major: Nursing

What made you choose this major?

I’ve always had a passion for helping people and the human body is very interesting to me. Nursing is the perfect combination of the two. I also have a sister that was in the hospital for a long time and the nurses that cared for her were so wonderful. Witnessing nursing first hand made me sure that is was the profession for me.

How has what you’ve learned prepared you for your future?

I’ve learned an extensive amount about body processes, diseases and skills nurses perform every day. I have also acquired enhanced teamwork and leadership skills that will prepare me for working with many different healthcare professionals for the best outcome of the patient.

What opportunities have you had to work closely with a faculty member and what impact has that had on your education?

I’ve definitely benefitted from Carroll’s small class sizes. The professors know me by name and make a real effort to assist me when I need it. Also, in the lab I receive one-on-one instruction on how to complete skills which is very helpful in nursing.

What’s one of the most unique experiences you’ve had relating to the coursework for your major?

My first clinical in an assisted living facility has been a very exciting opportunity for me to practice my skills on real patients. It’s not only prepared me to become a better nurse but also reminds me that even though classes can be tough this is what I aiming for. The day I graduate from Carroll, pass the NCLEX and land my first job in the hospital will make it all worth it.

How has Carroll enriched your growth as a person outside of the skills you’re learning in the classroom?

Nursing is an intense major that requires a significant amount of a student’s time. However, I’ve managed to be involved in several other activities with the use of good time management skills. I currently have three on campus jobs. I’m a math mania tutor, ASPIN student worker and a supervisor for the College of Health Sciences. I also serve as the secretary of Student Nurses Association and CU move. In addition, I’m a student alumni ambassador and a mentor for the Office of Cultural Diversity and a program called PASOS.

Why did you choose to attend Carroll University?

I believe the opportunities and experiences I’ve had and will have here will not only help me to earn my degree, but also expand in my abilities and skills in order to be an be a contributing person who leads, listens and gives.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

Carroll has become a very important part of my life. I’ve met some amazing people, expanded in knowledge, grown as a person and gained experiences that have and will benefit me in so many ways.
