What made you choose this major?
I wanted to pursue a major that challenges me and leads me to great opportunities in the future.
How has what you’ve learned prepared you for your future?
I’ve had many internships throughout my time at Carroll. My classes have exposed me to a great amount of material, which in turn I have utilized in my internships and jobs. My auditing internship at PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP has led to my career after graduation.
What opportunities have you had to work closely with a faculty member and what impact has that had on your education?
I’ve had some great professors at Carroll. One who specifically stands out is Dr. Jessica Boll, who teaches Spanish. She has shown not only great enthusiasm while teaching, but also respect and care for her students. On different occasions, she has helped me and provided advice for educational, career, personal and sports-related issues. Also, I’ve gotten to know my accounting professors on a personal level. They have been great with advice on career-paths and internships, and they have influenced me to reach my goals.
What’s one of the most unique experiences you’ve had relating to the coursework for your major?
In my auditing class, all of the students have to complete an entire audit of a company. We were exposed to all the different aspects of a company. It was a difficult process and very time-consuming, but I do feel more prepared to start my career in auditing.
How has Carroll enriched your growth as a person outside of the skills you’re learning in the classroom?
Being involved at Carroll has made these four years very busy, but fun and worthwhile. I’ve created amazing friendships and memories through diverse experiences within organizations and teams. Also, in four years, I have earned a minor in Spanish and completed enough additional coursework to become eligible to sit for the CPA exam, been the captain of the tennis team for two years as well as the vice president, treasurer and liaison of Enactus. This organization has allowed me to utilize the skills that I learned in the classroom and apply them to real-world situations, while also expanding my network with business executives within the Milwaukee/Waukesha area. I’ve also been a part of numerous committees, organizations and volunteer efforts. Being a mentor, leader and volunteer in Big Brothers Big Sisters has allowed me to help others and learn so much about myself. Being involved may seem like a lot of work, but it is do-able and very worthwhile. The secret is to keep a schedule and to stay organized. I recommend any and every Carroll student get involved in extra-curricular activities, because they will lead to great things: friendship, experiences and job opportunities.
If you were recommending your major to a prospective student, what would you tell them?
Get ready to work hard, but it is definitely worth it! An accounting grad can take so many different routes, whether it be CPA, private industry, tax, governmental, etc. I like to think of it like this: work hard now, and enjoy the benefits later in life.
Why did you choose to attend Carroll University?
I have thrived in the small-class sizes, met so many great people and received great opportunities from attending Carroll.
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
Get involved on campus, and make the most out of your time here. The four years will go very quickly. Carroll is a great place!
