Duy Nguyen ’14, a Carroll University mathematics program graduate, earned his Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) designation in Dec. 2017, making him the youngest person ever in Vietnam to complete the process.

To earn a FSA designation, a candidate must master actuarial tools and techniques and pass a series of examinations and other determined components. These professional credentials prove an actuary’s expertise in mathematical analysis that can support strategic business decisions.

“It was only at Carroll that I discovered actuarial science. The profession was virtually unknown in Vietnam at the time, and most insurers have to hire foreigners to do actuarial work. I passed several exams while at Carroll and got a good job offer because of that,” said Nguyen. “Being a FSA certainly opens a lot of doors, especially when I am working in emerging markets like in South East Asia.”

“Individuals can become a certified actuary by earning designations.” Explained Dr. John Symms, associate professor of mathematics at Carroll University. “Duy excelled in his majors of mathematics and global studies at Carroll, as well as actuarial science courses he completed. We’re proud that he has gone on to complete the highest designation one can earn.”

Duy is now working as an actuarial consultant for Ernst & Young, Singapore.
