Free Wisconsin Wind Orchestra concert at Carroll

WAUKESHA, WIS.— Wisconsin Wind Orchestra, the resident professional ensemble of Carroll University, will play an intimate concert on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013. The performance begins at 4 p.m. in Humphrey Memorial Chapel, 238 N. East Ave., Waukesha. It is free and open to the public.

The orchestra is led by Lawrence Dale Harper, professor of music. Their repertoire includes “Suite Française” by Francis Poulenc, “Suite in D” by Arthur Bird, and the seldom heard “Magnum Ignotum (Great Mystery)” by Giya Kancheli.

Kancheli, a Polish composer, created an introverted meditation on the great mysteries that surround us, but are open only to those willing to sit in silence. The winds are accompanied by an electronic tape. About his work, Kancheli wrote:

The material in “Magnum Ignotum” has been rendered in a very simple manner and serves only one purpose: to evoke a state of mind in which humbleness lodges itself in the soul in anticipation of divine singing. The tape consists of four parts: a chant by a high priest, an authentic recording from the ’30s of a three-voiced improvisation by West Georgian greybeards, a mix of natural and artificial tone colors, and a Georgian hymn sung by the vocal ensemble Rustawi. All this music is full of that mysterious spirit that I shall never be able to grasp.
