Kohnke-Hunter is a practicing marriage and family therapist, teaches family-to-family classes for the National Alliance on Mental Illness, and volunteers as an adult literacy instructor in addition to teaching at Carroll. She was born and raised in a small town with traditional values, married young and raised a family of three daughters. Until 2000 she held only a high school diploma; now she has a doctoral degree in educational psychology.
